“Here’s a detail shot- black spray paint, 2x light coats, with 5x coats of poly over top of the distressing. Black looks best over light finishes if using a wood tone finish for your undercoat color, so that you get contrast. I like to put it over maple or poplar. Sand the enamel paint in areas where it would naturally wear through- around knobs, corners of tops, crest rails on chairs, etc. I use 320 grit super fine sand paper. I wait 3 days and spray it liberally with polyurethane” – Dan Elman
Dan’s Black Painted Chippendale Chairs
“Chippendale chairs, moderately distressed. These are made by Thonet in the 50s and came from a restaurant. The client wanted the distressed black finish only. She recovered the seats herself after delivery. That’s why only some of them have seats in the pics.” – Dan Elman
Dan Elman For Kitsch-n-Kaboodle
“Here’s a detail from a 1920s vanity- very natural looking wear patterns achieved with black spray paint and ultra-fine sand paper, with a contrasting light color wood peeking through. If you distress through to a color that is too dark, it will get lost in the black finish. This one was a light walnut color before it was painted. The client replaced the original mirror with something she bought elsewhere & hung on the wall above it post-delivery.” –Dan Elman
