If you’ve decided that the time is right to start selling painted furniture, it should be assumed that you’re passionate about it, that you’re knowledgeable about it, and that you feel like you have something worth selling. Congratulations! You’re one step closer to jointing the painfully small fraternity of ambitious people who have found a way to make money off of something you love.
Follow this guide to selling your passion.
1. Take High-Quality Photographs
Good photographs are probably the most important element of getting your painted furniture sold. Whether it’s for an eBay auction, a Craigslist ad, a Twitter post, or for your portfolio, high-quality images taken in a neat, appealing environment are the difference between you appearing to be a professional who sells quality items and some guy selling junk out of his attic.
If you know a shutterbug, buy them dinner in exchange for them taking the pictures for you. If you have a good camera, or a phone with a good camera and want to do it yourself, acclimate yourself with your camera and get a basic, free editing app such as Fotor. Take some straight-up snapshots and some artistic or black-and-white shots. MMake sure the background is clean, neat and well lit. Also, don’t use your flash if you’re using a camera phone. It corrupts both texture and color, both of which are crucial to making painted furniture shine.
2. Build an Online Portfolio
A website that acts as your online portfolio, as well as home base for your sales information, your backstory, your contact info, and any other necessary information is key to looking professional and convincing people who were merely interested in your ad or social media post that your painted furniture was made or at least traded for by a serious seller and that they’re not getting junk from an online yard sale.
WordPress is the 800-lb gorilla on the block when it comes to free, novice-level web pages that are attractive and easy to maintain. There are other hosting sites, such as Blogger, that are wildly popular as well.
3. Use Social Media
A few years ago, a Craigslist ad and eBay auction were good exposure. Now, social media is king. Get a Facebook business page and consider their targeted ads.
Not only do you need a Twitter account, but use their powerful search tool to find out who is talking about painted furniture, specifically the kind you want to sell. In those conversations, you’ll be able to eavesdrop on the people most likely to become your customer base.
4. Accept Mobile Payments
You’re a 21st-century seller; you must have an equally modern method of accepting money. Accepting mobile payments is no longer a novelty. You must be able to receive payments electronically and online. Some people are most comfortable with the ease and security of a third-party gateway such as PayPal, but you must also be ready to accept physical payments with a smartphone card reader such as Square, which plugs into your phone’s 1/8″ jack.
No matter your strategy to sell painted furniture, the basic rules of good business apply. Be honest in advertising. Be upfront about your product and be fair in pricing. Don’t make promises you can’t keep and keep the promises you make. Always respond right away to any complaints or questions, follow up with thank yous to your customers, and have fun selling what you love.

Turn up the volume on a pair of plain metal file cabinets by painting them a bright, bold hue. Paint them yourself, or ask an auto body detailer to do it for you. Finally, meld the two with a single top cut from scrap stone.
Editor’s Tip: Remove or mask off all the hardware before painting. Use a spray paint specially formulated for metal; apply at least two coats.- Better Homes and Gardens Magazine
